Why a letter sinks faster than speech
Speech is supported by conversations, books, cartoons and everyday life. And writing requires a separate practice: sit, remember letters, write carefully, keep attention and not get lost in spelling.
If a child writes almost nothing in ordinary life, the skill begins to weaken by itself, even if he continues to speak well. If your child is already writing, but makes many mistakes like “malako” or “fairy tale”, read separately Why do children write in Russian as they hear?.
Where to start and how to stay motivated
It is better not to start with long dictations or large exercises. Much more useful short and feasible steps: sign a picture, write 2-3 words, a short note, a message, a list or one simple phrase.
For a child, it is not the amount that matters, but the feeling that writing in Russian is generally possible and not scary. This is what sets the stage for the next step.
A separate mini-rhythm works well: 5-10 minutes of writing 3-4 times a week instead of one long session. So the skill is held regularly, but does not have time to turn into a heavy duty.
It is useful to alternate formats: one day - words and captions, the other - short messages, then a comic, then a letter to a relative or a list for real life. The more sense in the task, the less resistance.
Writing is easier to develop when it comes to meaning: write to your grandmother, come up with a caption for a drawing, make a small comic book, a gift list or a funny story. Then Russian is needed not for the sake of verification, but for the sake of real communication.
Another important rule: first notice what happened, and only then gently correct the mistakes. If your child hears only about inaccuracies every time, he begins to avoid writing. If he sees that he is already able to express his thoughts in Russian, the motivation is much better.
If your child already resists writing, outside help often relieves tension and helps build a calm system in which writing again becomes a feasible skill, not a family conflict.
What exercises can be used at home
At home, short tasks work best, where your child writes: with a hand, a marker, on a card, in a note or in a small text. The shorter and clearer the task, the easier it is for your child to turn on without resistance.
- Short captions for drawings, photos or stickers: 1-3 words, then a simple phrase.
- Mini-dictants of familiar words: not for evaluation, but to calmly train letters and connections.
- Notes for the family: "I'm home", "pleasant appetite", "don't forget the book", "I love you".
- Adding the beginning of the phrase: "Today I...", "I liked...", "I want...".
- Lists for real life: shopping, gifts, things for a trip, plans for the weekend.
- Correction of one or two omissions in a word: when your child enters the missing letter or ending.
- Rewriting a short funny phrase or mini-poem in beautiful handwriting without haste.
- A letter with a marker on a board, in the sand, on large patterns or a dot trim if the hand quickly gets tired.
When a letter is built into small clear actions, your child gets used to Russian letters faster, is less afraid of mistakes and begins to write more confidently.
