Sh, Zh, Shch, C: why Russian sounds are difficult to pronounce and write

Russian hissing and affricates often become one of the most noticeable difficulties: your child seems to speak Russian, but some sounds are pronounced inaccurately, confused in reading and transfer errors into writing.

Why are these sounds complicated?

The sounds of S, F, Sh, H, C require precise work of the tongue, lips and hearing. If similar sounds are arranged differently in the language of the environment, your child can replace the Russian sound with a more familiar version.

For example, S may sound too similar to S, H to English ch, and C may decay or be replaced by a simpler sound. For a child, this is not “porridge in the mouth”, but an attempt to embed Russian sound into an already familiar system.

Why Pronunciation Affects Writing

If your child does not hear or pronounce the sound accurately, it is more difficult for him to choose a letter. He can confuse S and S, C and C, write the word as he hears it.

Therefore, working only with prescriptions does not always solve the problem. Sometimes you first need to develop phonemic hearing: learn to distinguish sounds by ear, and only then fix letters and rules.

How to do things at home

Short games are useful: find words with the sound of S, come up with a funny phrase on F, clap when you hear H, compare pairs of words. It is important that your child does not feel “corrected” every minute.

If the sound is severely disturbed, a speech therapist may be needed. But even with the usual bilingual confusion, regular gentle practice helps: hearing, pronunciation, reading and writing should go together.

What is considered a good result

Your child begins to hear the difference better. It repeats the sound in individual words. Then it translates into speech, reading and writing.

The main thing is not to demand instant perfection. The calmer your child is about complex sounds, the faster they become part of live Russian speech. If the difficulty manifests itself not only in pronunciation, but also in spelling, look at the material. About the letter "as heard".
