What does "home" dictionary mean?
Home dictionary are words that are needed for everyday life: eat, sleep, play, fast, beautiful, cartoon, mother, lessons. They are important, but they are not enough for reading, retelling, writing and learning.
Your child can freely talk at home, but get lost when he meets the words: reason, prove, compare, act, hero, mood, conclusion, description.
Why is this happening abroad?
School and book language children often receive in English or other language of the environment. Academic vocabulary: compare, explain, describe, reason, evidence. Russian analogues can hardly appear in his life.
As a result, Russian remains the language of the family, but does not become the language of thought, explanation and study. It’s not the parents’ fault; it just requires a separate environment.
How to understand that the dictionary sags
Your child often says "well, that's it," "thing," "how is it in Russian," replaces the exact words with English, or avoids long answers. In the retelling, he may remember the plot, but not have the words to frame it.
Sometimes it seems that your child did not understand the text. In fact, he understood but could not express the idea in Russian.
How to expand the dictionary
You don't need 30 word lists, you need live use. New words are best taken from books, lesson topics, family conversations and school situations. It is important to immediately use them in phrases: compare the characters, explain the reason, draw a conclusion.
When a child begins to use exact words in speech, Russian becomes not only a home language, but also a full-fledged language of thought. And if your child does not like to read, but the dictionary needs to be expanded, a selection will be useful. Books for bilinguals who find it difficult to love reading.
